In November of 2021, an atmospheric river event caused widespread flooding and cascading impacts in western Canada and the Fraser Valley in particular. The Lower Fraser Floodplains Coalition (LFFC) had recently formed as an Indigenous-led initiative, around the goal of building flood resilience in this region. Partners to the initiative include the Emergency Planning Secretariat, Resilient Waters, Watershed Watch, West Coast Environmental Law, Ebbwater Consulting, Kerr-Wood Leidal Associates and UBC/SALA. They have since been working to help bridge levels of government along with public, private and non-profit sectors to advance the relationships, knowledge, policies and practices needed for regional and sub-regional approaches, for flood resilience in this region to flourish. HeronBridge provides support with process design and facilitation of large regional and sub-regional forums, as well as advice and coaching on effective collaboration.

Wildfire has become a seasonal occurrence across much of British Columbia. On the west coast, where wildfire has not been as common, a growing network of organizations are nonetheless recognizing the need to build regional capacity to respond to climate impacts on the forested frontlines of our communities. In May 2024, concerned groups and individuals from the academic, non-profit and public sector gathered for a day-long exploration of watershed-level approaches to wildfire resilience in the coastal region, including strategies for collaborative leadership, ecosystem management and resilience actions. HeronBridge supported the organizers to engage with local First Nations and Indigenous wildfire specialists to guide the design, as well as facilitating a dynamic one-day session featuring keynote speakers, case study discussions and small group activities.
